Project Designed to Improve Environmental Quality for
Country’s Residents
Overland Park, Kan. (July 15, 2008) -- Black & Veatch, a leading global
engineering, consulting and construction company, has been selected by the
Romanian Government to provide technical assistance in the development of a
Black Sea Erosion Control Program.
The program is supported by a $385,000 grant from the U.S. Trade and
Development Agency to Romania’s Ministry of Environment and Sustainable
Development (MESD).
“The recommendations we provide will help guide future coastal zone
management and further restore and protect Romania’s rich natural beauty and
resources,” said Bill Van Dyke, President of Black & Veatch’s Federal
Services Division. “During recent decades, Romania’s Black Sea coastline has
experienced significant erosion, resulting in adverse effects to public
infrastructure and the environment. With our multi-discipline team of experts,
Black & Veatch will help develop a sustainable solution for mitigating the
coastal erosion.”
Black & Veatch is providing MESD with technical assistance in designing
and implementing an Integrated Coastal Zone Management System that will help
determine potential structural and non-structural coastal erosion control
measures. The project includes developing a framework for a sediment management
and transport program along the northern coastline that includes the
internationally renowned Danube River Delta.
“Through the development of a sustainable and integrated coastal zone
management and erosion control program, Romania will move a step closer to
complying with the European Union’s Water Framework Directive,” said Neal
Gruber, Project Manager for Black & Veatch. “When completed, this project
will benefit Romanians with enhanced water quality and enable environmentally
sound development along the coast.”
